The cost of New Year’s resolutions

One in five people in Gloucester have made starting a business their New Year's resolution. But could the cost hold them back?

New research by Freedom Finance shows that most people have made just two resolutions for 2018 and will shell out £4,612.52 trying to stick to them.

Resolutions include major home improvements, travel, buying a house and starting a business.

Nationally, 12 per cent of those surveyed would like to pursue a business venture, and they expect to spend £6,593 to make it happen.

In Gloucester, people think they will spend £2,142.17 in total on their new year's resolutions for 2018, although 47 per cent worry they won't have enough money to make them happen.

Just down the M5, one in eight people in Bristol hope to start a new business. They think their resolutions will cost a bit more, at £2,970.74, and slightly less of them (43 per cent) worry they won't have enough money.

Heading north, one in seven people in Bristol would like to start a business in 2018. They expect their resolutions to set them back a whopping £9,831.31, yet less than one in three (31 per cent) worry that they won't afford it.

Punchline says: We always knew the people of Gloucester were an enterprising bunch, they just need the capital and the confidence to make it happen.
