Council name change on the agenda

The proposal to change a Gloucestershire council's name is up for discussion next week.
Tewkesbury Borough Council's full council will discuss proposals to change its name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council at its meeting on May 15.
Tewkesbury borough covers a large area and encompasses many villages and suburbs closer to Cheltenham or Gloucester, including Bishop's Cleeve, Churchdown and Brockworth.
Tewkesbury borough is 160 square miles and is made up of 51 parishes. Tewkesbury itself accounts for under 3% of the borough's geographical area and around 10% of its population. Bishop's Cleeve has a bigger population than any other parish in the borough.
Feedback from councillors, community groups and local businesses, showed that many people in the borough don't identify with the name 'Tewkesbury Borough'. It isn't considered representative of the entire district and creates confusion between the town and borough councils.
The name North Gloucestershire Borough Council is an obvious alternative, as the borough is clearly the most northerly in the county.
Council officers also highlighted that the council's logo is outdated and difficult to use on digital assets, such as the website and online forms. As a result, it needs to be updated. Keeping the name Tewkesbury Borough Council would still require a change in logo and would therefore cost almost as much as changing the name.
The council has set aside £10,000 from year end balances to cover any costs associated with updating the council's logo and a name change.
A phased rollout means that changing physical asset logos will only happen as part of their normal maintenance cycle, so the costs will be covered within existing budgets.
Logo options have been designed in-house to keep the costs down.
Council officers are recommending the name change, subject to a six-week consultation.
If councillors agree to go ahead with the proposal, the consultation will run from May 17 to June 28. Members of the public, local businesses, town and parish councils, and other partners and interested parties will be able to make representations on the proposed name change of and logo options.
