Successful careers fair for Gloucester school

St Peter's High School and Sixth Form Centre in Gloucester hosted their latest Careers Fair on Friday 26 November 2021 coordinated by Sarah Beeton, head of careers at the school.

The careers fair was attended by 36 employers and providers welcoming students from St Peter's across years 10, 11, 12 and 13.

Exhibitors ranged from engineering companies such as GE Aviation and Severn Glocon Group to construction companies like Kier who support the school with an Enterprise Adviser.

The armed forces spoke with students about possible careers and hospitality providers like The Calcot Collection inspired young people by speaking about their roles.

The school invited a range of universities covering courses including law, music, drama and sport and colleges offering post-16 courses.

As well as the Careers Fair, young people had the chance to listen to one of seven careers talks delivered by the experts in their field. Talks ranged from careers in the civil service and army to apprenticeships and T levels. All students attended at least one of these talks.

Students said: "I am aware there are lots of courses and careers to choose from" and "I hadn't realised there was so much choice and so many different careers available."

Another student added: "Going to university isn't the only route to success!"

Gloucester MP Richard Graham visited the school for the fourth time and spoke to their students. He even offered the chance of work experience in his office for interested students.

Stephanie Layhe, principal of St Peter's High School in Gloucester said: "Overall the morning was a great success with feedback from the exhibitors telling us what we already know - that our students are amazing!

"They said our students were very well prepared, attentive and polite. Speaking to several students since it's clear that some now have firm ideas on their careers path whilst others now have more questions and ideas to research."

The school would like to thank all of the employers, universities and colleges who took part in this activity.
