Stroud weekly says goodbye to readers

The Stroud Life newspaper has been published for the last time today.

The weekly newspaper is disappearing after almost a decade following a major shakeup of Gloucestershire newspapers by owners Trinity Mirror.

Today Stroud Life printed a special front page showing  previous publications with the message: Thank you and goodbye.

Online at Gloucestershirelive.co.uk, Stroud Life Editor Ben Falconer said it had been an absolute privilege to work on, then edit Stroud Life.

Author Jilly Cooper who lives near Stroud said she was "utterly heartbroken" to see the last edition of one of her favourite newspapers.

The county's daily newspapers the Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo become weekly publications from next week.

The Citizen is launching a new Stroud edition to replace Stroud Life and the Bristol-based Western Daily Press will launch a Gloucestershire edition with daily county news.

Reaction to the news that the Citizen and Echo are going weekly has been mixed. But many media experts believe it was inevitable and the switch to weekly publication will ensure the survival of local newspapers.

But there is sadness that five jobs will go.
