Rugby pub’s quiz lays £700-plus charity gold egg

What do you do when it's World Egg Day? If you're Sue Tyley from Gloucester, who runs Purely Pickled Eggs in Stroud, you organise a pub quiz and watch as it goes nationwide.

The next thing you know, you've raised a cracking little nest-egg for the charity Bowel Cancer Research.

The entrepreneur, who produces 12 different flavours of Purely Pickled Eggs with her partner Dave Walker and a team of picklers at Production EggQuarters in Stroud, is never afraid of a challenge.

She began fundraising for Bowel & Cancer Research last year because her best friend was diagnosed with bowel cancer and is still having treatment.

"I wanted to involve all our brilliant pub customers and do something for World Egg Day which would raise a bit of cash," said Sue, from Gloucester.

"Landlords love a quiz but they're really busy and like getting something off-the-shelf. So we wrote a lot of eggy questions and gave pubs a week to take part in a Pub Quiz Eggstravaganza in exchange for a small donation.

"Enterprise Inns were really helpful in promoting it. We ended up with pubs all over the country taking part in the UK's first PickledEggHeads Pub Quiz. Everyone had a lot of fun and we might make it an annual event."

One of the participating pubs was the Kingsholm Inn in Gloucester. "There were seven teams and we all discovered a lot of unusual facts about eggs," said landlady Gail Sutton.

"A huge thank you to all the pubs who participated and to their very generous customers. You have blown our target of £500 away with an amazing £753 collected."

Deborah Gilbert, chief executive of bowel and cancer research. "Our aim is to ensure that no one should die of bowel cancer and we can only move towards that goal with the help of our fantastic fundraisers," she said.
