Roads closed as flooding hits county

Roads across Gloucestershire, including a big stretch of the A38, have been closed due to flooding.

And residents of Alney Island in Gloucester were evacuated to GL1 Leisure Centre yesterday, as flood defences came close to overtopping.

On the Gloucestershire County Council Highways page, the council confirmed its main focus is key routes (A and B roads and roads to hospitals and schools).

It said during a major incident like the current floods, it may not be able to attend to all incidents as quickly as usual. This means that some roads may remain closed for a number of days.

As at 8.35am this morning (January 5), the confirmed road closures are:

• Walton Cardiff Lane, Tewkesbury

• Howells Road, Tewkesbury

• Swilgate Road, Tewkesbury

• Rock Street, Chaceley

• Northway Lane, Tewkesbury

• Ham Road, Tirley

• Gander Lane, Tewkesbury

There may also be some small local lanes closed which don't appear on the list.

The county council will update the page regularly, as roads reopen or more roads are closed. Drivers are advised to check the website before driving to any of the affected areas.

On X, formerly Twitter, Gloucester City Council said: "Please don't ignore road closures and don't enter flood water which can cause water to enter properties."

Also on X, Gloucestershire County Council advised residents to be careful when pumping out their houses: "Please use care when dealing with water pumps, particularly those powered by fuel, as misuse can in extreme circumstances lead to carbon monoxide poisoning."

The UK Government's flooding service still has a large number of flood warnings in place for the county. Roads, properties and farmland are expected to continue to flood in these areas:

They are:

• River Severn at Tewkesbury

• River Severn at Gloucester
