Road closures planned as work carried out to reduce flooding risk

Roads will be shut or restricted around a county village as work takes place to help reduce surface water flooding.

Highway drains in Slimbridge will be repaired and replaced this autumn.

Residents and local businesses have been invited to a drop in event to find out more at the village hall from 3pm to 8pm tomorrow, Wednesday 30 August. Severn Trent Water will also be at the event with information about the sewer improvement works being planned in the area for 2018.

The work to renew and repair the highway drainage in Slimbridge will be carried out in phases between the outfall pipe near Lightenbrook Lane and The Close.

The improvements are planned to start around 11 September and continue to 17 November. There will be no work or road closures in place for autumn half term, 23 - 27 October.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said, "This scheme is vital to reduce the risk of future flooding in Slimbridge, and the diversions may cause short term inconvenience for long term benefits. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience during the closures."

Cllr Stephen Davies, local county councillor for Stroud (Hardwick and Severn), said, "The closures are inconvenient but the work is necessary to prevent flooding in future. I would encourage residents and businesses to come along to the drop in event to find out how this work might affect them."

Visitors to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust will need to allow extra time for trips in September due to diversions around road closures in Slimbridge village.

Details of phases and closures can be seen at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/slimbridge

The roads will be closed in a number of different phases:
