One of Gloucester's main city centre streets will be closed and traffic diverted while repairs take place.

Essential resurfacing work to Brunswick Road and Bell Lane in Gloucester will start during the February half term.

The resurfacing will take nine days and is scheduled to start on Friday 9th February at 7pm and finish on Sunday 18th February. Crews will lay 317 tonnes of material, which is the equivalent of 496 original Mini Coopers in weight.

For the safety of the public and work crews, a full road closure will be in place 24 hours a day for each section of the scheme. Crews will be working round the clock shifts to undertake this essential work as quickly as possible.

A diversion route will be in place via Eastgate Street, Trier Way and Park Road throughout the scheme. Brunswick Road will be closed to through traffic 24/7 for the duration of the scheme.

The county council says to keep disruption to a minimum, the work will be has been scheduled for the half term week when traffic volumes are lower.

The county council and contractor Amey will be making improvements to the road in three section, dates and access arrangements are as follows:

Section 1 - 7pm Friday 9th to 7am Sunday 11th Feb - from and including Bell Lane north towards Eastgate Street.

• Access to Eastgate Shopping Centre via Bell Lane for car park or deliveries is not available for 36 hours, from 7pm Friday to 7am Sunday. Residents and visitors are advised to use the Kings Walk entrance of the car park until this section of work is finished. Residents and businesses in the work area are being contacted with further details about access arrangements.

• Access to St Michael's Square, Greyfriar's Quarter and Kiln Close from the Parliament Street direction only.

Section 2 - 7am Sunday 11th to 5pm Weds 14th Feb - from the entrance to Greyfriar's Quarter up to the junction with Bell Lane, including the corner from Parliament Street around into St Michael's Square.

• Access to St Michael's Square and Greyfriar's Quarter available from the Parliament Street direction only.

• Access to the Eastgate Shopping Centre for car park and deliveries from the Eastgate Street direction only. The traffic orders in place on Brunswick Road between Eastgate Car Park entrance and Eastgate Street will be suspended for the duration of the diversions.

• The bollards at the rear of Kiln Close will be removed to provide resident access; please approach via Park Road and Cromwell Street. The bollards will be reinstated when the work is finished.

Section 3 - 5pm Weds 14th to 5pm Sunday 18th - Parliament Street junction to Greyfriar's Quarter.

• Access for Eastgate Shopping Centre car park and deliveries, Greyfriar's Quarter and Kiln Close will be available from the Eastgate Street direction only.

• Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the resurfacing scheme including to the Gloucester Library and Museum of Gloucester.

Damaged kerbs will be replaced prior to the resurfacing work and temporary traffic lights will be on site from 22nd January for one week.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said: "Residents may notice that we have increased resurfacing in Gloucestershire. Keeping your highways in great condition is extremely important to us, and this route is being improved because we know it's an important route for residents and businesses coming in and out of Gloucester."

Cllr Pam Tracey, county councillor for Hempsted and Westgate, said: "This is an important route and the resurfacing is going to have a significant benefit for the local community here in Gloucester. This has been a long time coming and it will enhance our journeys into the city."
