Road closures as city centre street gets a makeover

Northgate Street in Gloucester city centre is being spruced up with a new road surface.

Work is being carried out on the section of road from Debenhams department store to Wilko over five days.

The road will be closed between 9.30am-3.30pm from 18 - 22 September. This means there will be no vehicular access to The Oxebode, St Aldgate Street and Hare Lane as well as the works area on Northgate Street during the closure hours.

Affected businesses are being contacted so that they can arrange deliveries outside of these times, but otherwise it will be business as usual.

The county council says the road closure will avoid peak traffic times to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: "This resurfacing will help keep the city centre an attractive and well maintained place to shop, work and visit. Our aim is to show that Gloucester is open for business and an area to be proud of."

Cllr Pam Tracey, county councillor for Hempsted and Westgate said: "This work is great news for local businesses and shoppers alike - there's a lot of regeneration happening here in central Gloucester, and it's good to see that Northgate Street is now set to benefit from a little TLC."
