Punchline Business and Community Champion: Superdry pledges to help NHS and frontline staff

Apparently when a Superdry designer mentioned how friends who worked in the NHS would appreciate something comfortable to wear post shift a certain someone's ears pricked up.

And when that certain someone is company founder Julian Dunkerton, a man not adverse to a little altruism, winning his backing can propel your idea along just nicely thank you.

Which is exactly what has happened and at least helps introduce the story behind a Crowdfunding push to raise money to raise money to buy comfy clothes for those coming off the back of hospital shifts.

All of which, of course, was prompted by the desire to do more.

"Morgan Church, a designer at the Superdry Creative Centre, Cheltenham told us about his friends who work in the NHS and how committed they were to work through this crisis," said Kat Jameson, a spokesman for the Cheltenham fashion brand and world-wide success story which has made Mr Dunkerton a multi-millionaire.

"He told us they really feel bushed at the end of a shift and would love some fresh clothes to put on, so we decided to help him with this creative-led scheme.

"It started locally with donations from Superdry staff, family and friends, but we quickly decided to make it nationwide.

"Julian loved the idea so much he pledged if we hit the target, he will triple it. So, in effect we triple our ability to donate 100 per cent organic cotton essentials to NHS heroes.

"The first parcels are due to go out next week. Anyone is welcome to get involved."

Punchline took a look at the donations to date counter on the Crowdfunding page and it has indeed passed its £15,000 target - although it is still accepting donations.

Which looks like Mr Dunkerton will be digging deep - assuming the £15,000 target is what he agreed to triple!

We can not wrap this story off without also mentioning Superdry's other pledge - to donate 100,000 gloves, masks and aprons as well as 20,000 visors to key workers in Gloucestershire care homes, to help protect the most vulnerable.

"Both enterprises will work hand in hand, to protect the most vulnerable and support those on the frontline," said Ms Jameson.

All of which is why Punchline has named Superdry as a Business and Community Champion.

The campaign is an initiative backed by the Gloucestershire local enterprise partnership, GFirst LEP, and the Growth Hub, which runs the network of business support centres county-wide.

The aim of the campaign - to shine the spotlight on some of the great work being done by businesses to help their communities during the pandemic.
