MPs to be given a vote on no deal

MPs will be given a vote to rule out a no-deal Brexit or delay the UK's departure from the European Union, the Prime Minister has confirmed.

In a lunchtime House of Commons statement, that followed a meeting of the Cabinet this morning, Mrs May said that there will be meaningful vote on Brexit by Tuesday, March 12.

If that deal is voted down, a second neutral amendable motion will be voted asking MPs if they want to leave the EU with no deal.

If the Commons rejects no deal there will be a third vote on a "short limited extension of Article 50."

Mrs May said the Government will be releasing a paper later today detailing the country's plans for no deal.

She said that "good progress" had been made during talks with EU leaders at the summit in Sharm el Sheikh earlier this week.

"I know members across the House are genuinely worried time is running out," she said before adding: "If we have to, we will ultimately make a success of no deal,"

The first vote will take place on Tuesday, March 12 on whether to adopt the deal negotiated with the EU.

If that motion doesn't carry, a second vote will take place on Wednesday, March 13 on whether MPs support a no-deal Brexit.

Mrs May confirmed that the UK would: "only leave without a deal on March 29 if there is explicit consent in the House for that outcome."

If that motion fails then a third vote will take place one day later on Thursday, March 17 requesting an extension to Article 50.

Mrs May said: "Let me be clear, I do not want to see Article 50 extended.

"Our absolute focus should be on working to get a deal and leaving on 29 March.

"An extension beyond the end of June would mean the UK taking part in the European Parliament elections.

"What kind of message would that send to the more than 17 million people who voted to leave the EU nearly three years ago now?

"And the House should be clear that a short extension - not beyond the end of June - would almost certainly have to be a one-off."

MPs will vote on whether to accept the proposed amendable motion detailing the order of the votes on Wednesday.

Gloucester's MP Richard Graham called the today's developments "the latest twist in a long-running Brexit saga" and said that it's vital the result of the 2016 is respected.

It is vital that we respect the Referendum and leave without damaging jobs and security," he said.

"And I hope that legally binding changes on the N Ireland border insurance policy will enable Parliament to approve the Deal next week or March 12th - which would give businesses the certainty they need."
