Plans announced to convert football ground into space for housing

Ecotricity today revealed its plans to create almost 100 new homes on the site of Forest Green Rovers' current ground.

The Stroud-based green energy company wants to build 95 properties at The New Lawn in Nailsworth, should permission be granted for Rovers' proposed new stadium at Eco Park at J13 of the M5.

The new housing plans, which have been submitted to Stroud District Council, consist of state-of-the-art sustainable homes, ranging from one-bed apartments to four-bed detached houses.

They incorporate a variety of housing styles including detached, semi-detached and mews-style houses, with 30 per cent of the properties dedicated to affordable housing.

Ecotricity founder and Rovers chairman Dale Vince said: "If Eco Park goes ahead, we think this would be the best use of The New Lawn.

"We're at an early stage, but we'd look to build low carbon and low cost homes using the latest construction techniques - a range of buildings from one bed flats to detached houses.

"There are some very interesting developments in Europe which strike the balance between technology, sustainability, aesthetics and affordability.

"We'll be looking at best practices in the eco home space, and hopefully bring that to Nailsworth."

Sustainability will be at the core of the planned development - the plan is to minimise energy use and carbon emissions, and construct homes to an excellent environmental standard, using locally sourced sustainable building materials and recycling demolition material wherever possible.

The planned 2.8 hectare development would support and enhance the character of Nailsworth - retaining and enhancing important trees and hedgerows to protect the habitats and species present.

Ecotricity would also plant new trees throughout the site and designate a specific area for biological diversity.

The company has given careful consideration to local connectivity too, including the addition of a paved square that provides a focal arrival point, new walking and cycling routes, and accessible street space.

Ecotricity also listened to community feedback during public consultation events last year, and acted on recommendations to include a community hub to the proposals - which could be in the form of a community meeting space, a café, or a sports or work space.

The site is located on Nympsfield Road on the western edge of Nailsworth, with the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the north and west, deciduous woodland to the south and Nailsworth C of E Primary School playing fields to the east.

A decision is expected on the application in the summer.
