Night time road closure over Coombe Hill
26th September 2017
A key route into Cheltenham will be closed overnight for more than a week in October while resurfacing work takes place.
Gloucestershire County council will carry out the work on the A4019 Coombe Hill between 7pm-7am during the night from Thursday, October 5, to Saturday, October 14, excluding Saturday and Sunday nights.
The council says the work will help prolong the road's life and will address defects caused by frequent use. A diversion route suitable for heavy vehicles will be fully signposted.
A road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the travelling public and the council's workforce.
The road will be fully reopened during the daytimes from 7am to 7pm.
Approaching from the west, the diversion will be via:
- A38 through Twigworth
- A40 Golden Valley Bypass
- A4019 from the east
Diversions will be in reverse when approaching from the west.
Two local pubs, The Gloucester Old Spot and The Swan at either end of the scheme, sit just outside of the works. Customers will still be able to reach their local watering hole by following the diversions in place.
The Knightsbridge Lodge Care Home and Knightsbridge Business Centre both fall within the scheme. The council is liaising with both about access requirements.
Residents are asked to plan journeys in advance to avoid the closure times; emergency vehicles will be permitted to use the road whilst closures are in place.
Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: "We are happy to see continued investment into Gloucestershire's roads. We have identified the need to take swift action to resurface this section of road and keep the county driving forward.
"The road closure will inevitably be disruptive, but with work restricted to the night time, this is being kept to a minimum."
