New factory gives golf company a shot at growth

A cool £1 million investment in a new factory will give a golf trolley manufacturer from Gloucestershire a shot at doubling its turnover.

Richard Graham MP visited Stewart Golf's new factory on Waterwells Business Park to do officially open the county firm's new headquarters.

It is a move which allows the fast-growing company, which has a strong export trade, to prepare for what it hopes will be a positive future for its 20-strong staff team.

And it was a move made possible through the help of site agents ASH Chartered Surveyors, which help the firm achieve a premises which allowed it to have one eye on the future and potential expansion.

Mark Stewart, founder and chief executive officer of the company (pictured above with David Funnell, managing director of Stewart Golf and Richard Graham MP), said: "Stewart Golf moved to the new building after spending more than 13 years based in Stonehouse where the company was founded.

"Since moving to the factory, efficiency has increased by over 40 per cent and the company is better prepared for the beginning of the golf season than it has ever been."

It is estimated the company, which hand-makes its products, will be able to grow its turnover from £2.5 million to £5 million by 2021.

"I think this is really positive for Gloucester. That you have decided to stay in Gloucestershire and manufacture here," said Mr Graham.

"We are never going to win if we try and manufacture things on the cheap. It has to be special, it has to be handmade, something that will appeal to people who have the money to pay for that quality."

Stewart Barnes, of QuoLux, the specialist business leadership training company, has worked with both Mr Stewart and Mr Funnell and was there on the day along with colleague Jo Draper for the official opening.

"These guys are a really good example of an entrepreneurial business and of a firm which  has understood the benefits of having a space which will allow them to adapt and be more productive.

"This new facility has allowed them to cut lead times and meet orders quicker.

"They are the sort of company that post Brexit we need to be encouraging."

Brexit, said Mr Stewart, was not something the firm was being distracted by currently.

"What I do know," said Mr Stewart, "is that we manufacture golf trolleys and we will be manufacturing golf trolleys after Brexit too."

Last year the company made an estimated 6,000 trolleys. Top of the range is its X9 Follow (pictured above), which starts from an estimated £1,600, and has a remote control function which allows the trolley to follow its owner along the fairway.
