Location chosen for Gloucester Covid memorial

A location and design for the Covid - 19 Memorial in Gloucester has been chosen.

The permanent reminder of the pandemic will be built in Gloucester Park opposite the Spa Road entrance gate.

It will honour those who have lost their lives and the contribution of key services during the crisis.

Proposals due to be presented to councillors on Monday reveal a design consisting of a circle of stones, with a provisional title of We Stood Together.

The height and shape has not been decided but they will be visible to anyone visiting the park and benches will be provided for quiet contemplation.

It is hoped local materials will be sourced for the stones and there will be signage to explain their meaning.

Each stone will represent one of the groups of key workers providing essential services

throughout the pandemic.

• Health and Social Care

• Key Public Sector

• Local and National Government

• Education

• Food

• Police and National Security

• Transport

• Utilities

The decision to create the memorial was made by Gloucester City Council in March 2022.

Councillors said they wanted a fitting tribute that remembered those who lost their lives and recognised the immense contribution that key workers, volunteers and community organisations made during the crisis.

An update on the progress is due to be presented to the overview and scrutiny committee on February 27.

The report states that The Ecclesiastical Insurance and Financial Services company have offered to provide funding for the project.

It adds: "The memorial will be relatively maintenance free and vandal resistant. There is also good lighting in that area identified for the sighting of the memorial and it would be very visible to anyone visiting the park.

"Ecclesiastical Insurance work closely with local stonemasons and have suggested that they could be involved with the project. It is hoped that their expertise can be utilised to advice on the most suitable type of stone, and any potential engraving work."

A consultation will be held on the design before the monument is created.
