It's official: Gloucester is one of the best places to work in the country

Gloucester remains one of the best place to work in the United Kingdom, according to a report by jobs portal Glassdoor.

The survey that found the 25 best places in the country to work in put Gloucester in third place, although down from the city's second place standing from 2019.

Cambridge has jumped ahead of Gloucester to take second place on the podium, behind Slough - no really - which was crowned best place to work for the third time in a row.

"Our latest report shows that companies are continuing to look outside of the big cities to set up offices and recruit local talent, in part driven by ever improving access, favourable rents and salaries," said Amanda Stansell, a senior research analyst at Glassdoor

"The growth in flexible working also means employees are no longer spending every day, 9-5, in the office, meaning the location of the company is less important than it once was.

"Companies can get away with not having offices in the larger, expensive cities - like London - as employees are prioritising flexibility and convenience over the prestige of an office address."

The metric used for the survey takes into account the volume of jobs offered in each place along with the relative cost of living and job satisfaction value.

Hiring opportunity is determined by the ratio of active job openings to population on the Glassdoor platform.

Cost of living is determined by the ratio of median annual base salary to average area home value.

Job satisfaction ratings per location is based on at least 80 company reviews shared by local employees on Glassdoor over the past year.

All those factors combined to give a total score out of five, with Gloucester's score coming in at 4.1 - the same score as Cambridge.

A lower job satisfaction score - 3.5 to Cambridge's 3.7 - and fewer job openings saw Gloucester lose out on second place.

The median salary in Gloucester is £25,116, according to the report and the median home value came in at £246,575.
