VIDEO: Inside Tetbury's quirky new pet shop

A pair of ambitious animal lovers have been bow wowing the Cotswolds with their quirky pet store.

The Tetbury Pet Shop opened late last year and offers additive-free pet food for cats and dogs, a pick 'n mix treat station and a coffee lounge.

It is owned by Amelia Black, 26 and Alastair Correya, 27, who moved to Gloucestershire from Edinburgh nine months ago and were captivated by the independent spirit of the town's high street.

The duo, who already ran a successful pet food company supplying 400 wholesalers, decided they had to be part of it after other plans collapsed.

Amelia said: "Moving down to the Cotswolds we had planned to incorporate a pet shop into our new warehouse facility to help grow our product range with direct customer feedback.

"After our warehouse option fell through, we made other arrangements for this side of the business and discovered the shop space to let.

"It was really a leap of faith and initially our landlord didn't choose us as tenants. After the other lease fell through the agent contacted us again to let us know it was ours if we wanted it.

Amelia's Dad invested and helped set up the shop and they opened it two weeks after getting the keys.

It only sells pet food made without any additives, including their own range of dog friendly peanut butter sold under their brand Nuts for Pets. They set up that business in early 2019 after noticing there was a gap in the market.

Amelia said: "At the time we were Amazon FBA Sellers selling a competitor's product that was doing well online but contained Palm Oil.

"When we launched Poochbutter, we were the second dog friendly peanut butter on the market and through social media, pet shops started to reach out to us very quickly with orders.

"Nuts for Pets has really snowballed from there and continues rapid growth year on year. We had our first investor join us mid last year."

During their four years in the industry they have befriended many independent pet brands and they decided to use their shop to help them thrive. As well as food they stock toys, bedding, collars and products to help with anxiety.

Amelia said: "Each brand is carefully researched by us before landing on our shelves. All are sourced from within the UK and if from outside, are chosen because they're unique and fun."

Amelia, previously an assistant manager at a chain restaurant, and Alistair, who set up his first business at the age of 16, aren't stopping there.

They plan to add a grooming space to the shop early this year and have dreams of conquering the market.

Amelia said: "We're big believers in pushing ourselves to the maximum when it comes to our business endeavours.

"We can see The Tetbury Pet Shop expanding to new locations across the country and settling itself into the luxury online market, which we know to be an untapped sector in the pet industry."

For now you will find them in the Tetbury shop most days with nine month old black Labrador Nairobi.

Amelia said:"The shop has far exceeded our expectations. We have had so much support from our local community and people are delighted to have us here.

"It's a fun place to bring your four-legged friends."
