HMV sells more music than Amazon

High street music retailer, HMV, has become the UK's biggest seller of physical music.
Based on sales for the 12 weeks to 23rd September, results from Kantar Worldpanel show that HMV increased its market share to 28 per cent, way ahead of Amazon's 21.1 per cent, as reported by Retail Gazette.
HMV, which has stores in Cheltenham and Gloucester, is the UK's last high street music chain. But part of its success has come from turning it mail order service into a competitor for Amazon.
Peter White, manager of King's Walk Gloucester, said: "HMV is a key tenant of King's Walk and it's great to see this positive news on the hight street as we head into the busy festive season."
The company said there is still demand from customers for physical music. It also saw a rise of 21 per cent in gift sales over the same period, contributing to its second consecutive growth in market share.
Punchline says: "This goes to show if you have your proposition and prices right, you can beat the digital retailers. There is life in the high street yet. But with Amazon is aiming to take over both online and high street sales, as it looks to expand into bricks and mortar, the battle is far from over."
