High street sports retailer goes “outdoors”

A popular sports clothing business has been given unconditional approval for the merging of two successful stores.

JD sports announced the £112.5million acquisition of Go Outdoors at the end of November the previous year.

After concerns it would reduce overall choice in the UK market, the merger has been given unconditional approval from the Competition and Markets Authority.

Within the deal, JD sports will purchase the 58-store chain from YFM Equity Partners and 3i group, one of which is situated on Barton Street in Gloucester where the old B&Q used to be situated.

Go Outdoors whose products vary from bicycles to water-proof clothing will add a variety of outdoor brands to JD's stores such as Millets, Blacks and Ultimate outdoors.

JD Sports chief executive Peter Cowgill said in JD's trading update: "I am pleased with the outcome of the CMA's investigation and delighted to welcome Go Outdoors to the JD Group.

"Go Outdoors will make an excellent addition to the existing JD Outdoor business and I am confident that it will build upon Blacks', Millets' and Tiso's recent success on the high street and strengthen our consumer proposition within the Outdoor sector."
