Good Food Guide lists 18 county restaurants – with two new surprises

Two new restaurants have become part of the list of magic ingredients swelling the number of Gloucestershire eateries in the Good Food Guide 2018 to a tasty 18.

This year the guide, put together by that most British of food stores, Waitrose & Partners, also champions the delights of the up-market The Swan, based in Southrop, and the decidedly everyman watering hole that is The Woolpack Inn, Stroud.

The pair rub shoulders now in the list with perhaps the county's finest restaurants - including Le Champignon Sauvage, in Cheltenham, which has risen to number 15 UK-wide this year, Lumiere, run by Jon and Helen Howe since 2009, Lords of the Manor, Upper Slaughter and The Painswick, at Painswick.

Harry Wynne-Morgan, general manager at The Woolpack Inn, said the pub was thrilled the work of its chef, Adam Glover, had been recognised and championed.

Saved from closure two decades ago by artist and designer Daniel Chadwick, the rich and famous and the working man and woman of the Five Valleys have come to hold the pub - once famously the watering hole of one Laurie Lee - in high esteem.

"We don't advertise anywhere. We have not attempted to become a gastro pub and kick the drinkers out. The drinkers are hugely important to us. Our diners enjoy the atmosphere and the food," said Mr Wynne-Morgan.

The kitchen in which Mr Glover works his magic on ingredients described to Punchline as simple, local and fresh - is open from Tuesday till Sunday from noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm with a four-hour Sunday lunch slot lasting until 4pm. Vegetarians will find as much to delight as the carnivor.

Visitors will not go hungry on a Monday evening. That is home-made pizza night.

"Adam obsesses over the dough for the pizza bases and the flavours. It has become a popular night too," added Mr Wynne-Morgan.
