Gloucestershire is worst region for driving under the influence

Gloucestershire is the worst region in the UK for positive or refused breath tests, according to new research.

The research, carried out by GoShorty, analysed data from a series of Freedom of Information requests and Government sources.

Gloucestershire is the UK's top area for drivers failing or refusing breath tests, with 303.26 instances per 100,000 people. It is closely followed by Cambridgeshire, which saw a rate of 289.37 cases per 100,000.

The two police force areas are far ahead of anywhere else in the country, with third placed North Wales recording only 146.86 instances per 100,000 people.

But while Gloucestershire's officers have been failing to crack down on drink driving, they've been keeping busy with swan training.

Rural crime officers in Stroud have attended a course at Slimbridge Wetland Centre, so that when they are called to incidents involving swans in the road, they will be able to handle them correctly.

Gloucestershire Constabulary has recently been placed in special measures due to in adequacies in investigating crimes and supporting victims.

Regarding the swan training, a spokeswoman for the force, said: "This does not affect our response to crimes such as sexual assaults or impact the focus we have on improving our performance in light of our recent HMICFRS PEEL report."

Punchline said: "The drink driving results are really disappointing. To be the lowest ranked force in the country is nothing to be proud of and clearly more work needs to be done.

"But at least we can all be safe in the knowledge that our local police can safely handle swans."
