VIDEO: Gloucestershire firm Versarien showcases graphene concrete

Forest of Dean-based innovation firm Versarien has today been showcasing its revolutionary graphene-enhanced concrete to the construction industry.

Representatives from the building trade, along with dignitaries, were invited to the firm's new Longhope Business Park headquarters to see the laying of 5,000 square feet of concrete foundation.

Back in May, the world's first graphene-enhanced concrete for commercial use was poured at Solstice Park in Wiltshire for a gym owned and run by military veterans.

This was followed by its use by builders at a residential property in Symonds Yat.

Graphene is made from a single layer of carbon atoms. Adding the material to concrete strengthens it by around 30% compared to standard concrete, meaning less is needed, so helping construction projects meet carbon emissions targets.

The firm's relocation to Longhope Business Park in the Forest of Dean was seen as a major boost for the area in terms of jobs and creating a hub for innovation.

In November, Versarien announced a partnership with Cheltenham-based fashion brand Superdry to create graphene-enhanced sports clothing.

The demonstrator floor uses graphene enhanced polypropylene fibres which eliminates the need for steel rebar and there was also a demonstration of the 3D printing capability.

The event showcased two products Cementene used in 3D mortar, floor slabs, flooring and concrete foams and Polygrene that enhances polymer performance and augments recycled polymer properties.
