Gloucester company to develop nuclear facility in Wales

A £40m facility supporting the design of advanced nuclear technologies will be developed in north Wales by the Welsh and UK governments.

Brockworth-based Horizon Nuclear Power will develop the the Wylfa Newydd site on Anglesey. The deal will see investment in technology to reduce the high cost of the sector and bring down energy bills.

Duncan Hawthorne, CEO of Horizon Nuclear Power, said: "We're delighted to welcome this Nuclear Sector Deal. It's a clear demonstration of how government and industry will work together to ensure nuclear continues to play a crucial role in providing clean, secure power for the UK, as well as delivering jobs, skills and investment across the country.

"The Deal clearly sets out the opportunities and the challenges for the industry, for example, building the skills base needed to maintain the UK's position as one of the world's leading nuclear countries and the commitment to increase gender diversity. We look forward to playing our part.

"We're particularly pleased to see the Deal launched in Wales, which has a long and successful association with the nuclear industry. Our Wylfa Newydd project is part of that relationship, and it will bring benefits for generations to come on Anglesey, across the north Wales region and Wales as a whole."

In a statement to the House of Commons, Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark said: "The UK is likely to need significant new nuclear capacity in order to meet our carbon reduction commitments at least cost, particularly as we electrify more of our transport and heating. "

The project will create up to 850 permanent jobs in Anglesey, as well as 4,000 jobs during most of the construction period, rising to 9,000 at the peak of construction.
