Extra rail services promised but where does Gloucestershire fit in? - NEW COMMENT

The rail industry has promised an extra 6,400 trains will run every week by 2021.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) said about £50bn was being spent on the network, which would result in an 11% rise in the number of weekday services, as reported by the BBC .

But unions are sceptical, claiming there simply aren't enough trains and staff to make it happen.

If it does go ahead, it should be good news for us here in Gloucestershire, as the proposals include an increase in train frequency for London commuters and improvements in the Midlands, West Country and Wales.

It is not yet clear whether the increased train numbers will improve overcrowding or bring down ticket prices.

Here at Punchline, we welcome the news. A good rail service is essential for business and improvements should help get more business people out of their cars and onto public transport. If only ticket prices could remain stable, making rail travel really cost-effective for Gloucestershire businesses.

What do you think of our rail network?

Have you been let down by poor service?

And what should be done about our railway stations?

We'd love to hear from you.

Kevin Cranston: In general I find that GWR runs a good service from Stroud in both directions. What we really need is an hourly through service, rather having to change at Swindon. Then, the short overcrowded trains will be a thing of the past.

Many years ago there was talk of a Paddington to Birmingham service via Stroud. That would also be an excellent idea.
