EXCLUSIVE: Cheltenham cafe closes as staff are locked out of building

A cafe in Cheltenham town centre has had to close because staff cannot get into their building - but they hope the unusual situation will soon be resolved.

Pickles, which is next to the Everyman Theatre in Regent Street, offers smoothies, pastries, cakes and coffee.

But just four months after founder Lucy Pickles opened the business, she has been forced to close it this week after the leaseholder of the building she is based in got into legal difficulties.

In a message to her customers on the front door of the cafe, she said: "We're closed for now (But not for long!).

"Our leaseholder is dealing with some legal issues which means we can't currently get into the building. This is not connected to Pickles, we're still going strong and will be back serving you as soon as we can.

"We're planning to reopen next week, but will keep you posted on our socials."

She added that in the meantime, the cafe would trade from a pop-up facility at the Molton Brown shop in nearby Promenade on Sunday, November 2.

Lucy also thanked customers for their patience and support and said it meant the world to her and her team.

In a separate message on the cafe's Instagram account, she stressed that the problem was not the fault of her business.

She said: "Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with Pickles as a business. We're doing fine and can't wait to welcome you back through the doors.

"We're planning to reopen on Tuesday November 4 and will keep you posted if anything changes.

"I started Pickles only four months ago and never thought I'd be dealing with circumstances like this, but your support really does mean everything so thank you for sticking with us."

The cafe is the latest in a series of food and drink businesses in Cheltenham to close recently or announce their impending departure from the town centre.

They include the permanent closure of The Find cafe and Domaine 16 restaurant in Regent Street.

And as exclusively revealed by Punchline on Monday, Chelsea Brasserie is planning to move from Montpellier to the Ramada by Wyndham hotel site in Gloucester Road early next year.
