EXCLUSIVE: Pharmacy in Waitrose closes as troubled chain’s workers are investigated

A pharmacy at the Waitrose supermarket site in Honeybourne Way, Cheltenham, has closed - amid continuing investigations into people working for the chain that ran it.

A notice has been placed in the window at Jhoots Pharmacy, saying that it has ceased trading and telling people where the nearest pharmacy is.

There is no information on the notice about why the business closed although it appears that it happened suddenly.

A letter to Jhoots Pharmacy Limited from Waitrose's solicitors has also been put up in the window of the retail unit. It says that "various goods" were left inside without the site owner's permission and demands that they be collected.

It comes as the General Pharmaceutical Council, which is the regulator for pharmacists and pharmacies in Britain, said it had taken enforcement action against Jhoots and was investigating some of the national chain's workers.

In a statement, the council said: "There are currently over 140 pharmacies owned by Jhoots on the pharmacy register. Since January 2025, we have taken enforcement action across five separate premises owned by Jhoots.

"We also have some ongoing investigations relating to pharmacy professionals working for Jhoots. We are unable to provide further detail about these investigations at this stage."

Jhoots Pharmacy, which also has a shop in Edinburgh Place, Cheltenham and two in Gloucester, has been approached for comment but has yet to respond.

However, in a statement on its website on September 12, Manjit Jhooty, CEO of Pasab Ltd & Jhoots Healthcare Ltd, said: "We are aware of recent media coverage regarding the Jhoots Pharmacy brand. We would like to clarify that Pasab Ltd and Jhoots Healthcare Ltd (t/a Jhoots Pharmacy) operate entirely independently from Jhoots Pharmacy Limited and its associated companies. While the trading style "Jhoots Pharmacy" is shared, these organisations are separate and distinct.

"Our priority remains the wellbeing of our staff, patients, and the communities we serve. We are committed to ensuring that services across our branches continue to be delivered to the highest professional standards.

"If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly through the appropriate channels.

"Thank you for your continued trust and support."

The closure at Waitrose has had a knock-on effect at Morrisons' pharmacy in Up Hatherley, Cheltenham. A notice there asks customers to be patient, saying that staff are "much busier than usual" because of the closure of the other pharmacy.
