Cyclists get into gear to use improved route
10th July 2017
Commuters who cycle into work have received a major boost with the reopening of popular route in Gloucestershire.
Following flooding in 2016, damage meant that a cycle route near Maisemore had to be diverted close to the A417.
Gloucestershire County Council made funding available to help make the repairs to the boardwalk and this has been carried out by Sustrans.
Sustrans is a UK charity which aims to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport for the benefit of their health and the environment.
The boardwalk forms part of the National Cycle Network route 45, which is a vital commuter route for people traveling between Gloucester and communities to the north-west in and around Maisemore.
Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "This is a really popular route with both cyclists and walkers so I'm really pleased we've been able to help fund the work on the boardwalk section near Maisemore.
"It's an important link in the National Cycle Network and it's great that we've been able to get the pathway fully reopened in time for the summer holidays."
Cllr Phillip Awford, local county councillor for Highnam, added: "This is most welcome news. The route is really valued by locals and the wider community, including cycle groups.
"I'm delighted to see it fully reopened. Hopefully it'll encourage some more people to take up cycling and improve their own health and wellbeing."
