Could Gloucester business park be sold after all?
By Andrew Merrell | 23rd July 2018
Earlier this year we followed the saga of the potential sale of one of Gloucestershire's business parks to a French retail giant.
While the sale of St Oswald's Retail Park in Gloucester never took place - it would have been part of a bigger deal involving site owner Hammerson, Intu and French business Klepierre - speculation could be about to begin again.
Shareholders concerns about the UK retail property sector has seen Hammerson reveal the sale of two of its retail parks - and according to reports it has hinted at more disposals to come.
The shopping centre colossus, which was behind the transformation of the former Gloucester cattle market into today's thriving retail park, said it had exchanged contacts on the Imperial Retail Park in Bristol and the Fife Central Retail Park in Scotland.
It is a deal sees the firm £164million better off and £300million for the year - so far.
David Atkins, chief executive officer of Hammerson, which also owns Cabot Circus, Bristol, and the Bullring in Birmingham, said: "We continue to see opportunities to dispose of selected assets in order to better deploy capital on behalf of our shareholders.
"We look forward to providing a further update on disposals and capital deployment tomorrow when we report our half year results."
In April Hammerson called off a £3.4million deal with Intu after recommending it to shareholders. It would have created the UK's biggest property firm with £21 billion worth of assets across Europe.
Hammerson is expected to reveal a new strategic plan that is meant to address shareholder anger after it ditched plans to acquire rival Intu, which would've created the UK's biggest property firm, with £21 billion worth of assets across Europe.
Hammerson and Intu called off the £3.4 billion deal in late April after the Bullring owner withdrew a recommendation for shareholders to vote through the acquisition.
St Oswald's Retail Park boasts 19,400 sq m of retail and leisure space including 1,100 sq m of restaurants and 990 parking spaces.
