Tasty Cotswold pub lunches are top treat for UK staycationers

Eating a pub lunch in the Cotswolds has emerged as the number one choice of 'happy places' for staycationers in a survey of 1,500 holidaymaking adults across the UK.

The survey was conducted for The Serviced Apartment Company (SACO) and looked at places in the UK which evoke special memories and ultimately contribute to making us 'happy'.

It was carried out at a number of locations across the UK, and the overall consensus of nearly a quarter (22.9%) was that 'lunch in a quiet Cotswold pub' was their top idea of a 'happy place' during a staycation.

The survey looked at respondents' fondest memories of holidaying in the UK as a child, and found that many want to replicate memories for their children.

It also focused on what they saw as their best holidays in the UK, and what would make them take staycations in the future. It concluded that food and drink shape our holiday experiences.

One Cotswold pub which sees lots of holidaymakers enjoying its lunches is the Ebrington Arms at Ebrington, near Chipping Campden, which earlier this year was voted the UK's number one village pub by The Times.

Landlord Jim Alexander said: "The Cotswolds has beautiful countryside, beautiful villages and the hospitality that's provided by the pubs and hotels is of a high standard.

"Combined with cycling on offer and the National Trust properties in the area, a pub lunch makes for a nice day out."

A few miles away at Broad Campden, David Hirst, landlord of the Bakers Arms, said visitors 'absolutely loved' to have a pub lunch in the Cotswolds.

"We've got a big pub garden and a big car park which really helps," he added.

The top 10 'happy' places for staycationers:

1. Lunch in a quiet Cotswold pub (22.9%)

2. Eating ice cream on Brighton beach (22.0%)

3. Hiking in the Lake District (20.1%)
