Contract awarded for new mixed-use development in Coleford

Work on an exciting new development in Coleford has moved a step forward.

Forest of Dean District Council has signed a letter of intent with contractor Speller Metcalfe to build ten new apartments, three commercial units, public space and gardens on the former Lawnstone House and bungalow site next to the district council offices.

The council is investing £2.3M in redeveloping the site which has been renamed 'Foxglove Gardens' to reflect the distinctive purple flowering foxglove tree which will be a key feature of the planting scheme.

The new build scheme will bring some welcome green space into the town centre and create an attractive setting for the mix of high quality housing, and commercial units ranging from 72 to 80 square metres. The works will also improve pedestrian access to the Forest of Dean District Council offices.

Cllr Richard Leppington, cabinet member for development, asset management, infrastructure and housing said, "I'm delighted to announce that we've awarded the contract for Foxglove Gardens to Speller Metcalfe.

"They submitted a strong bid for the work and we were particularly impressed to learn about their apprenticeship academy and their drive to use local suppliers and contractors.

"Foxglove Gardens will be a welcome asset for generations to come. As we continue to invest in our district, these new apartments, commercial units and public gardens will give the council some income which will then be used to deliver services for residents."

Speller Metcalfe has arrived on site and will be working there during 2019.

Mark Eaton, commercial manager at Speller Metcalfe said, "The Foxglove Gardens scheme is going to be a fantastic opportunity for us as a local contractor to work in partnership with both the council and our Gloucestershire supply chain to deliver more for the community, both in terms of the buildings and public spaces on site, but also through the creation of jobs and income for the local economy.

"We will be working with local businesses and residents to ensure minimal disruption and welcome the chance to promote the opportunities the construction industry can offer through site visits, work experience and open days."

The apartments will be available for private rent from January 2020.
