Conservatives take majority at Gloucestershire County Council

The Conservatives have held on to power at Gloucestershire County Council.

The Conservatives won 31 seats, Liberal Democrats 14, Labour five, Green two and People Against Bureaucracy one seat in yesterday's election.

The Tories have had to make some serious cutbacks across the board at Shire Hall, but the results show the majority of people still support them.

Is it that they are doing a fantastic job, or has support for Labour just disintegrated?

The Liberal-Democrats took seven of the 10 seats in Cheltenham. Could this mean Martin Horwood gives Alex Chalk a run for his money in the General Election next month?

UKIP failed to win a single seat. With Brexit now a reality, could this be the end of UKIP locally?

Here at Punchline, we've never known such a low-key council election. It has been completely overshadowed by Brexit and the general election.

Yet, despite this, the county council reported that voter turnout was up on 2013, at 37.04 per cent compared to 31.79 per cent.

Some good councillors from all parties have lost their seats, while others have stepped down, to be replaced by brand new councillors.

They will have a tough job ahead of them over the coming four years as they juggle balancing the books with providing the very best services to the people of Gloucestershire.

The good news is, if you don't like them or they do a terrible job we get the opportunity to replace them in four years' time. Don't you just love democracy!
