College students are ‘building’ towards future

The construction and building service students from Gloucestershire College have teamed up with local traders to gain on site experience.

Working with the local traders who have donated their time and resources for the project and working on a construction site has given the students experience in the industry and the ability to hone their skills.

This is the second project of its kind that has been ventured by the college following the renovation and sale of a property in Tredworth last year.

It is over six months that students from various courses, including plumbing, carpentry and brickwork, have contributed to various stages of the production which needed landscaping, electrics, plastering and plumbing, as well as other work on the house.

The house will appear on the market later this month with any profit made being put back into the College's next renovation project.

Gloucestershire College is holding an open afternoon at the renovated house on June 29 from 3pm to celebrate the hard work of the students, staff and supporters.

Anyone attending the event will have the opportunity to tour the house and interview the students and staff who worked on the project and the local merchants who provided the materials and tools.

Project manager Rachael Capener said: "We're so proud of the hundreds of GC students who have worked on the house as part of their training, facing the challenges and experiencing the sense of achievement you can only get from a real construction site.

"I'd like to thank the local merchants who have kindly donated both their materials and time to the project.

"Their investment in the next generation of construction workers will surely pay off, by providing them with a pool of skilled young people to hire from, who have gained valuable on-site experience."
