Coleford restaurant damaged and owner assaulted

A 50-year-old Broadwell man was refused bail while he awaits sentence for offences of assault and damaging a restaurant in Coleford.

Paul Jones of Queensway, Broadwell, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to inflicting grievous bodily harm on Angelo Arslan, assaulting Amelia Hancock by beating and damaging a wooden door at the Ritmos Tapas Bar run by Mr Arslan. All the offences were committed on June 12, 2022.

He denied a further charge of threatening to take revenge on Mr Arslan on June 17, by telling him he would kill him and burn his restaurant down.

Prosecutor Neil Treharne accepted the pleas and the judge, Recorder Don Tait, agreed to adjourn sentence at the request of defence barrister Ieuan Callaghan.

Mr Callaghan said he wanted the adjournment to obtain pre-sentence and psychiatric reports on Jones.

The lawyer said: "He has a significant record but of late it is really only for driving offences."

"I apply for bail as it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he will receive a sentence in due course which can be suspended.

"He can stay with his sister in Lydney, 8-9 miles from Coleford where these offences took place. There is also an address in Pembrokeshire he could go to which would lessen the risk even further that he would lose his temper, walk past the restaurant or threaten witnesses."

Mr Callaghan said Jones is anxious to have bail because he is at risk of losing his home and has only until October 30, to try to put measures in place to save it.

"If he is released on bail he would be very aware that if he breached the conditions and were remanded back into custody he would lose the opportunity of saving his home. He tells me his house means everything to him."

But Recorder Tait refused bail, saying "In my judgement he is facing an almost inevitable sentence of imprisonment for the behaviour which he has admitted.

"Bail is refused on the grounds that he may commit further offences or interfere with the course of justice."
