Cheltenham Civic Society submits plans for its new home

The refurbishment and restoration of the Civic Society's new home, Parmoor, in Cambray Place, has taken another step forward with the submission of its planning application by local architectural practice Edge Design Workshop.

One of the main aims of the proposals will be the full restoration of the Regency frontage by replacing the existing render with stone ashlar.

The forecourt will also be radically changed from the current tarmac hardstanding to an attractively landscaped garden with railings and provision of a drop-off and loading space. The garden will also feature a curved ramp leading up to give level access to the front door.

Cheltenham Civic Society chair Andrew Booton said: "We think that this will set a new standard for how the forecourts of other townhouses could be redesigned and hope that it will inspire others in the town centre to up their game."

The scheme will give the society versatile space for its activities while four apartments will secure a long-term income stream. It is also expected that other organisations will wish to hire this attractive town centre venue for their meetings and events.

The new space will seat nearly 100 people, with supporting facilities including a separate meeting room, toilets and a refreshment area, plus an office for the society's use.

"These facilities will give the civic society a significant presence in the town centre and the secure income stream will enhance our ability to support the wider community," added Mr Booton.

Cheltenham Civic Society acquired 26 Cambray Place last year following the sale of its previous HQ building at 13 Lypiatt Terrace. The latter building was originally gifted to the society in 1964 by Lord Parmoor.

Cheltenham Civic Society is an active network of citizens that promotes civic pride in the town.
