Ambitious plan following sale of £2m Gloucester hotel to Slough company

Ambitious investment plans for a £2million Gloucester hotel have been revealed after it was bought by a Slough company.

Kang Hotels wants to refurbish the 55-bedroom Oakwood Hotel and create a "high-end offering" for guests. Set within three acres of land, the hotel is home to a newly refurbished bar and a large restaurant.

The Grade II-listed Georgian manor house sits in Tewkesbury Road just outside the village of Twigworth. It was first transformed into a guesthouse in the 1980s and in its heyday was known as the Twigworth Lodge Hotel.
It has also been part of Brewers Fayre and Premier Inn over the years, before being taken over by Gloucester business Roomsbooked, which is based in Southgate Street and owned by local businessman Antony Clark.
The most recent owner put the property on the market for offers in excess of £2m.
They said: "It was with a heavy heart that I sold the Oakwood Hotel, however due to semi-retirement and emigration I have decided to reduce the size of my UK business assets.
"I had further plans for The Oakwood, including a new bar, room extension and child playground. The new owners are looking to complete my vision and have some great ideas. I wish them well."

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co announced today (Sept 23) the hotel had been bought by Kang Hotels for an undisclosed sum.
The Slough-based business was incorporated in July 2024 and already operates a growing portfolio of UK properties and is actively acquiring hotels. It plans to refurbish the Oakwood and introduce a new food and drink offering.
Harpreet Saluja from Kang Hotels said: "We are super excited to have acquired the Oakwood Hotel, as we see great potential to further develop it and present it in its finest form to our guests.
"We will be investing heavily in the hotel and look forward to bringing a high-end offering to new and returning customers in the near future."
Sam Roberts, senior agent at Christie & Co, said: "A former Premier Inn, this 55-bedroom, room-only hotel was operating successfully under the current owner's portfolio as an independent brand.

"We placed this opportunity on the open market and received a tremendous response within the first two weeks and, after competitive bidding, placed the hotel under offer swiftly.
"I'd like to thank the outgoing owner for entrusting us to handle the sale of his business, and I'd like to wish the incoming owner well in their endeavours as they expand their hotel portfolio further in the UK, no doubt we'll be seeing more of them.
"The local market is strong for opportunities such as this, and we have a number of eager buyers looking for similar assets."
HISTORY
The property just outside Twigworth was bought as a private residence by Gordon and Betty Vickery in the 1980s.
They won two planning appeals which allowed them to open it first as a B&B named the Twigworth Lodge Hotel and then later to open the Coach House restaurant on the ground floor.
In 2004 it was taken over by Brewers Fayre and after a £300,000 refurbishment reopened as The Twigworth.
It became Oakwood Hotel after being taken over by Roomsbooked.
