Business Insider has revealed Amazon's detailed plans to storm the UK supermarket sector, with ambitions to open hundreds of cashier-less grocery stores in the next three years.
Plans reveal that the e-commerce giant hopes to open more than 260 supermarkets before the end of 2024. This includes 60 in 2022, 100 more in 2023 and another 100 the year after.
Amazon said all of the new stores will be cashier-less, according to a Business Insider report.
A leaked document said: "In 2022, we assume a broader rollout of 2 store launches per week by the end of [the] year, targeting 60 total openings.
"In 2023 and 2024, we are planning 100 store launches per year, in line with more aggressive opening programmes achieved by convenience stores in the UK in the last five years, Tesco's, Sainsbury's and Co-op have all exceeded 100 openings per year."
