GL1 gears up for Swimathon 2024

Gloucester residents are being invited to make a splash for a good cause.

Freedom Leisure, the leading charitable and not-for-profit leisure trust that operates the leisure facilities in Gloucester on behalf of Gloucester City Council is inviting people to take part in Swimathon 2024 at GL1 Leisure Centre.

This annual event not only promises a fun and invigorating swim but also champions health and charity, supporting Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.

Swimathon 2024, set to take place in April, encourages locals to embrace the numerous health benefits of swimming while making a meaningful impact on the fight against cancer.

Participants can experience an exhilarating swim in a supportive community environment, all while contributing to vital funds for two worthwhile charities.

Karl Allen, Freedom Leisure area manager, said: "Swimming is not only a fantastic full-body workout but also a great way to promote cardiovascular health and overall well-being. By participating in this event, the people of Gloucester can make a positive impact on their health while raising funds for essential cancer research and care."

Freedom Leisure has a rich history of supporting Swimathon at all its swimming pools across England and Wales for many years. Joining the swimmers of Gloucester will be Mark Learnihan, Freedom Leisure's business development director who will be swimming 5km accompanied by his 10-year-old daughter Niamh, who will be swimming 1.5km.

Mark added: "Having been a competitive swimmer in my younger days I am passionate about the sport and acutely aware of the health benefits swimming can bring. Swimathon allows me to give something back and it is so rewarding to raise as much sponsorship as I can for the charities. Add into that, quality time with the family, it's a win-win."

Funds raised from Swimathon 2024 will go directly to Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie, supporting ground breaking research and providing care for individuals and families affected by cancer.

Registrations are now open, and participants can sign up at www.swimathon.org

Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a first-timer, Swimathon 2024 welcomes participants of all levels. Visit GL1 Leisure Centre to make a splash for a healthier you and a brighter future for those affected by cancer.
