Building extension will support electric vehicle market

Plans to expand an industrial building near Gloucester by around 50% have been given the go-ahead.

G-TEM (formerly Takao Europe Manufacturing Limited) applied to Tewkesbury Borough Council to extend its factory at Gloucester Business Park from 11382sq m to 17334sq m.

The plans include landscaping and access, as well as the demolition of a temporary detached storage building.

The world class manufacturer of high-quality metal automotive pressings and sub-assemblies was established at the Gloucester site in 1997 and has grown rapidly to fulfil customer demand.

It currently occupies two buildings on Gloucester Business Park - its headquarters and the Hurricane Road facility, which became operational in 2019. Due to the company's success in the NEV market ('new energy vehicle' describes all types of electric vehicles from battery-powered fully electric vehicles to plug-in hybrid cars), it is set to expand this building.

The expansion will see the number of staff employed on the site increase from 70 to 85.

Th extension will be positioned on the western side of the current structure, using underused land currently occupied by a temporary storage building. It is designed to match the eaves height, ridge top and width of the current structure.

The extension's dimensions include a 57m long press area and a welding and dispatch area set back by 13.4m and extending 43.6m.

The Design and Access Statement to support the planning application said: "The design of all elements in this submission aims to enhance its surroundings with an attractive, contemporary aesthetic that functions efficiently and safely for everyone.

"The form, scale, materials and colour have been carefully considered, along with landscape treatment and the building's relationship to its environment. The proposed expansion's size, scale and design respect the character and appearance of the existing building and surrounding area."
