EXCLUSIVE: Vision revealed for former Chambers pub in Gloucester

A vision for a cultural cafe in the former Chambers pub building in Gloucester has been revealed.

Local entrepreneur Rich Palmer wants to transform the landmark site into an "adult activity" hub bringing together local independent food traders, creatives and musicians.

The Corner will have an organic food market, cafe, artisan traders and a food court with local businesses like Solux and GloFresh.

There will be spaces for crafters, private meetings, a stage and a commercial kitchen aimed at giving emerging food businesses a boost.

Mr Palmer, who grew up in Abbeydale, said he has been talking with co-tenants of the building Jolt and Musicworks about the events line-up. It could encompass everything from festivals for young musicians, spiritual well being and sports to a panto, interactive talks on gardening, history and farm animals and celebrations of classic cars and English heritage.

He wants it to be open Monday - Friday 7am - 8pm and weekends 8am - 11pm with weekly events such as chess club, shift worker social and poets corner.

"I want it to be a platform for what's going on in the city," said the former pupil of Sir Thomas Richs Grammar School and St Peters High School.

"It is perfectly placed between the cathedral and train station so it can be a central hub and get Kings Square going, which has so much potential.

"I think this can kick start the regeneration of that area."

He began working on the plans last summer when he moved back to Gloucester from South Wales.

He said the project brings together all his past jobs and passions which include recruitment, facility services, care services, construction, business development, HR projects, carpentry, cycle mechanics, and managing a nighttime venue in Cardiff.

Mr Palmer plans to set up The Corner as a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the main income coming from the cafe contract.

He has financial backing from a local businessman for the project and has put in a bid for the lease of the building which is owned by Gloucester City Council.

The prime venue in Kings Square has sat empty since the Chambers shut but is a key part of the £200million regeneration of the Kings Quarter.

It wants a business to transform the site into a venue which sits well alongside its Forum development and the new university campus being built in the former Debenhams.

The council put the lease of the 484 sqm property on the market at the start of the year for offers in the region of £60,000 per annum.

It said it was keen for a café culture type venue promoting the region's talented food and drink producers.

Mr Palmer is one of several parties interested in the site but he believes his plans meet the council's expectations and will provide something the city centre is sorely lacking.

"I'm trying to do something different in Gloucester and tie in lots of businesses and get the council thinking in a different way," he said.

"A big brand might bring in money but that's not really where I see the town centre needing to go because town centres becoming identical is killing them.

"I want to get a light shone back on Gloucester as the capital city of this county and show people what we are capable of and get a creative vibe going.

"There don't seem to be many places to go socially for people like myself who are forward thinking and like cafe culture rather than the pub.

"We need something that bridges that gap. A cultural offering where there are interesting things to see and do."

The property is still on the market with M&P Property Consultants.

The council has said it cannot comment on offers received or the timeline to a decision due to commercial sensitivities.
