Trees could cause water works damage

Severn Trent has applied to Tewkesbury Borough Council for permission to get rid of trees at Mythe Water Treatment Works.

The four trees - a cherry, two alders and a hawthorn - are growing on top of a main inlet pipe, which could lead to the root systems potentially damaging underground pipes.

Severn Trent is applying to remove all the trees, which are in a conservation area, down to stump level and to grind all roots.

The water company said it would be happy to replace them with new trees to the south of the site, beyond the flood defence.

The proposed new trees would be those which can cope with seasonal flooding, such as willow, alder, aspen, Betula nigra or swamp cypress.
