Tewkesbury commits fully to county-wide planning agreement

Tewkesbury Borough Council has committed fully to working with other Gloucestershire councils on issues around land use and the environment.

It has signed the Gloucestershire Statement of Common Ground (GSoCG) - becoming the last of the seven local authorities to commit to the full document.

The county-wide planning agreement was prepared by Gloucestershire County Council, GFirst Local Enterprise Partnership and the six other local planning authorities in Gloucestershire in 2021.

They are Cheltenham Borough Council, Cotswold District Council, Forest of Dean District Council, Gloucester City Council, Stroud District Council and Tewkesbury Borough Council.

In preparing their respective local plans, local authorities are required to work together on strategic, cross-boundary planning matters.

In response to this, the Statement includes a series of 37 high-level agreements dealing with issues such as addressing the climate and ecological emergencies, housing and economic needs, transport provision, and the natural environment.

Tewkesbury signed up to a reduced version of the GSoCG in 2023, having opted out of certain environmental priorities.

At a full council meeting on Tuesday (Jan 23) it confirmed its commitment to the full document - including those aspects previously removed.

Cllr Mary Jordan, Tewkesbury Borough Council's lead member for built environment, said: "By signing up to the Gloucestershire Statement of Common Ground, we are committing to work collaboratively with other local authorities on key planning matters.

"This agreement reflects our shared focus on addressing issues like the climate emergency, housing needs, and environmental concerns.

"By actively participating in this initiative, we aim to streamline strategic planning efforts and ensure effective cooperation among Gloucestershire's local authorities."
