U-turn signals reprieve for flagship store

Thanks to an apparent pledge from local government, a reversal of plans appears to have reprieved a boutique department store in Stroud that was being eyed for closure back in January.

Sandersons Boutique opened at the Stroud Five Valleys Shopping Centre, in the town's Merrywalks, back in April 2021 and was heralded as the flagship store and branding jewel in the crown for the newly restored retail venue, which is owned by Cheshire-based Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Last year, the store, which offers a range of upmarket luxury brands, made a range of promotional offers to coincide with the coronation of King Charles.

A spokesman for Sandersons, which is the retail arm of Dransfield, said in January that the decision to withdraw was part of "a strategic review of the business in Stroud and we look forward to updating local stakeholders in the coming weeks."

Tony Davey, Chair of Stroud Chamber of Trade, added there had been speculation at the time that the plan was to refurbish the unit.

However, Mark Dransfield, Sandersons Boutique co-founder, has now issued an update on the future.

The owner of Five Valleys shopping centre said he is committed to securing the future of the shopping centre's flagship Sandersons Boutique Store - after council leaders pledged to explore plans to improve Stroud town centre.

The change of heart follows a strategic review by Sandersons' management team, as well as discussions between Dransfield Properties Ltd and leaders at both Stroud District Council and Shire Hall. It is understood that the councils have jointly reassured the company over their commitment to improve the "public realm" in Stroud.

The future of the store will see its footprint reduced, however, while another brand will occupy the remaining space. No job losses are expected.

Andrew Malley, Director at Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: "The company had reached a crucial stage in deciding the future viability of the Sandersons store and, following positive discussions with key stakeholders, we are now pleased that Sandersons are moving forward with works at the centre."
