UPDATE: M5 open after collision

The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J11 and J9, due to a collision involving two lorries (HGVs).

One of the HGVs crossed over from the southbound carriageway onto the northbound and overturned. The HGV's fuel tank then ruptured, and fuel spilled out onto the carriageway.

The closure is expected to be in place for most of the day today (February 6), as there is significant damage to the central reservation barrier and the road surface.

The southbound carriageway was initially closed, but two of the three lanes are now open (as of 11:30am).

Emergency services, including Gloucestershire Police, are on the scene. National Highways has deployed resources to assist with traffic management.

Delays of 30 minutes above normal are reported southbound, with just over three miles of congestion on the approach to J9.

Delays of approximately 15 minutes above normal are reported northbound.

National Highways is advising road users travelling northbound to follow the Solid Triangle diversion symbol on road signs:

• Exit the M5 northbound at J11 and take the first exit onto the A40 heading west.

• Follow the A40 to the roundabout with the A417 at Gloucester and take the third exit onto the A417 heading north.

• Continue on the A417 up to the M50 J2 and turn right at the junction to join the M50 eastbound.

• Follow the M50 eastbound back to the M5 J8 and re-join the M5 to continue your journey.

National Highways: South West have tweeted updates:

"One of the HGVs involved crossed over from the southbound carriageway onto the northbound and overturned, spilling diesel. One of the HGV's involved has ruptured its fuel tank. Resurfacing is required."

Southbound lanes have since re-opened.

National Highways: South West posted:

"Contractors have advised that the resurfacing works are complete. This will need time to cure before the road can safely be reopened. Apologies, I am unable to give a time for reopening at this stage. Please keep following the feed for updates."

The M5 has been reopened northbound between J11 (Gloucester) and J9 (Tewkesbury) following the earlier collision involving an overturned HGV.

Contractors have completed the barrier repairs and resurfaced the carriageway.

There are residual delays of less than 15 minutes.

In other travel news, the Severn Bridge will be closed overnight.
