Suite success: changes for romantic hotel get a 'yes'

Cotswold planners have given a Valentine's gift to a romantic hotel by approving alterations at the landmark 16th century venue – but it's business as usual while the changes are being made.

Despite pitching its appeal on age-old tradition and continuity, the Manor House Hotel, which sits on the High Street in Moreton-in-Marsh, is planning some subtle nips and tucks which will see new décor, replaced woodwork, general internal refurbishments and fresh lighting.

The most noticeable change from outside will be replacement windows for the eastern elevation of the hotel, while the key improvement inside will be the creation of one larger suite option on the top floor, thanks to the reconfiguration of two smaller rooms.

Owned by Cotswold Inns & Hotels, the Manor House Hotel is a flagship in the sub-brand collection of seven upmarket hotels that sit within the Fuller Smith and Turner Group's (FST) portfolio, the Cotswold collection sharing the same business umbrella as the vast UK chain of Fuller's pubs. In all, the group now has more than 380 pubs and hotels across the UK.

The changes in store for the hotel follow improvement work plans at the hotel's sister location near Tetbury, as reported in Punchline-Gloucester.com in November .

The emphasis for FST's Cotswold hotels is clearly put on exclusivity and luxury rural living, with venues dotted around key tourism hotspots. Clearly the group won't wish to gamble with the established messaging of their retail offer - hence the work being carried out now will, says the group, be subtle.

The Daily Telegraph recently visited The Manor House and gave it 8 out of 10, relishing its position "off the southern end of the High Street in handsome Moreton-in-Marsh."

The reviewer added: "It's within walking distance of this honey-stone town's galleries and enticing little shops; its station, too, with a direct line to London. The slight downside is that fairly heavy traffic rumbles along the road (the A429). A number of absorbing Cotswold sites are within easy driving distance, including Sezincote House, Bourton House Garden, Stow-on-the-Wold and Batsford Arboretum, which you can also walk to across a couple of fields."

A timescale for the improvements remains as yet unknown, but a spokeswoman for Cotswolds Inns & Hotels told Punchline-Gloucester.com that the work will not necessitate any closure and will be carried out with minimal disruption.

They added: "We pride ourselves on continually investing in our fantastic hotels to make sure they are always in the best condition - and The Manor is no exception. We are refurbishing a number of bedrooms as part of this rolling programme and creating a new family room. It's a popular venue with tourists and weddings and one of the jewels in our crown."
