131 marquees start to come down

The temporary structures outside Cheltenham's 131 Promenade are being taken down.

An Instagram post from 131 shows the marquees on the corner of the site on Queen's Circus Road being removed.

While it is undoubtedly sad times for 131, which has relied on the temporary structures for nearly four years, the Instagram post hinted at something new coming to the popular hotel, bar and restaurant.

It's six months since Julian Dunkerton's Lucky Onion Group, which owns 131, lost an appeal and Cheltenham Borough Council said the marquees needed to come down. This was despite Lucky Onion proposing to reduce the number and size of the structures.

The council first said the marquees would have to go in October 2022.

The structures in front of 131 (which encompasses numbers 125 to 133 Promenade) were installed between June and October 2020.

They were originally constructed without planning permission, but with the knowledge of the council, when planning enforcement was relaxed to address social distancing concerns during the pandemic.

In September 2022, the council wrote to all businesses with temporary structures asking them to remove them or apply for planning permission to keep them. The council turned down Lucky Onion's application to keep them in October 2022.

It then turned down appeals to keep the marquees in August 2023 and November 2023, because of the negative effect on the Grade II* listed buildings and the character of the Conservation Area.
