The 20th and 21st October is going to be a weekend of culture for the Cathedral Quarter in Gloucester.

Two days of arts-based and cultural events will be taking place within the High Street Heritage Action Zone.

An unusual and atmospheric art installation will be available to view in St Nicholas Church from Friday 20th October.

The 'We Are Gathered Here' art installation will depict a congregation in silhouette and pays homage to the people who have contributed to Westgate Street's heritage over time.

These wonderful artworks bringing past residents to life have been created by Art students from Gloucestershire College. The people represented have been selected based upon archival research. 

They once lived, worked, visited or supported Westgate Street at various times in the past. This installation demonstrates the long history of the street and its importance as a place of trade throughout the ages.

The art installation will be open to view Thursday - Saturday 11am-3pm and 5pm-7pm for the next two weeks and is a partnership between Gloucestershire Family History Society, Gloucester Civic Trust and the Churches Conservation Trust. It is supported by Voices Gloucester and Nicks Timber.

Marc Waters, Gloucester Civic Trust volunteer, said: "Gloucester Civic Trust is a key partner of this amazing art installation. It's great to help to bring to life the many characters of Westgate Street through the ages and display them in the fantastic church that is St Nicholas, Gloucester's version of the leaning tower of Pisa and formerly one of the wealthiest churches in Gloucester."

The 'Windows Through Time' light installation by renowned light artist Jack Wimperis will also be on display in Westgate Street. Huge windows will hang high above the street, and lighting will be used to hi-light the amazing architecture in the wealth of historic buildings.

Visitors to the street in the evenings of 20th and 21st, 6-8pm, will be able to pick up a trail leaflet from the Cathedral Quarter HQ at no 21 Westgate Street to complete. The trail asks you to find five different types of historic windows on the street and completed trails can be handed in to receive a reward.

Also opening on the 20th October is Westgate's Architecture in Photographs, an exhibition of photographs taken by Photography students from Gloucestershire College. The photographs depict the more interesting architectural details of the historic buildings on the street and will be on display in the Cathedral Quarter HQ at no 21 Westgate Street for two weeks.

The Cathedral Quarter Makers Market will also be returning to Westgate Street on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st October. Gloucester Business Improvement District is hosting 15 stalls offering unique hand-crafted produce and arts and crafts created by skilled local people. Alongside the stalls will be street entertainment, activities, and music.

All events are part of the Cathedral Quarter heritage-led regeneration project funded by Historic England and supported by Gloucester City Council and the Cathedral Quarter partnership.
