All eyes to the sky at Southrop Village Fete

Southrop may be a small village, but when it comes to their summer fete, the sky's the limit.

On Saturday June 10th fete-goers will get to see a Spitfire Flypast from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight followed by a spectacular aerial display courtesy of the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team*. They'll be dropping into the main arena where they will do a meet-and-greet and answer questions from fans.

Southrop is the only village fete in the country to be included in the Falcon's display calendar, which includes a performance at the F1 British Grand Prix.

Southrop Village Fete committee member Be Still said: "The RAF Falcons are in huge demand all over the country and in Europe. They've got over 60 displays this season so having them drop into our fete is an incredible coup and we're really grateful to the team. The Spitfire Flypast is just the icing on the cake."

While Southrop fete has grown in size over the years, the committee work hard to try and retain the charm and feel of a traditional fete as much as possible - and the picture-postcard Cotswold setting certainly helps.

The main road through the village is closed off for the afternoon so fete-goers can amble amongst the honey-coloured cottages and peruse the classic cars and stalls. There's certainly no shortage of bunting either; it lines the main street and criss-crosses the village hall where teas and delicious home-made cakes are served.

Across the road from the village hall is where the action happens. Here deck chairs and hay bales are perfectly placed outside the Pimm's & Ale tent facing the main arena.

This year the pupils of Southrop Primary School will kick off the festivities with some country dancing, which is followed by a fun dog show with classes like waggiest tail, best trick and best handler under 12.

Children and grown-ups alike can try their hand at the crockery smash, buzz wire and coconut shy and attempt to be the last man standing on the It's A Knock-out inflatable.

Some amazing experiences are on offer in the silent auction, including tickets to The Big Feastival, Giffords Circus, Cotswold Wildlife Park, The Barn Theatre and Barbury Shooting School.

Be Still added: "We're so grateful to all the Southrop residents who come out in force on fete day to help out. We just wouldn't be able to do it without them.

"We've been blown away by the generosity of local businesses who've offered experiences for the silent auction and owe special thanks to our brilliant sponsors for their unwavering support year after year: Butler Sherborn Cotswold Property Specialists, The Oxford Brush Company, Cotswold Eco Tubs and Sweet Fuels.

All proceeds from the fete are split equally between Southrop C of E Primary School, St Peter's Church, Southrop Village Hall and the Jubilee Playing Field.
