VIDEO: Protesters call for incinerator to be cancelled - in a song

Demonstrators sang a protest song calling for the controversial incinerator near Gloucester to be scrapped this morning.

Around 50 protesters gathered on the steps of Shire Hall in Gloucester as county councillors arrived for a council meeting.

Dubbed Pants on Fire, the placard-waving demonstration broke into a protest song to the tune of Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd.

The incinerator is already under construction at Javelin Park, Haresfield and last week it was revealed that cancellation of the council contract with Urbaser Balfour Beatty could have cost as much as £100 million.

Gloucestershire County Council says now the scheme is going ahead it will in fact save taxpayers over £100million.

There has been an ongoing dispute over how much information about the council's contract with Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB) should be made public.Originally, the county council published the contract on its website, with information it believed to be commercially sensitive removed.

The Information Commissioner told the council to publish the contract in full; however the council appealed to the Information Tribunal, seeking to clarify the legal position.

That has now been done and last week the Information Tribunal upheld parts of the county council's appeal. Important commercial information including key technical details can be kept confidential, says the tribunal but some prices and information regarding termination will now be published.

Jojo Mehta from the campaign group 38 Degrees said on its website: "Now we are being told that if the council uphold democracy and cancel the contract with UBB there will be a massive penalty to pay - up to £100 million - yet we are not being told how they have reached this figure.

"

We have a right to know how this happened. It is our money, our environment and our health that are at issue and we are not being told the whole story."
