College explores the wonders of science

Staff and students at Hartpury College are gearing up for a series of stimulating science-based workshops when British Science Week gets underway next week.

If you've ever wanted to know how a horse's lower limb works from the inside out or the best way to care for your pet if it has an accident - amongst other things - then this event is for you.

British Science Week celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths at events up and down the country and Hartpury staff and students are getting involved with a range of activities for schools and the public.

Hartpury College staff and students will showcase science-based events across the departments of sport, animal, equine and veterinary nursing.

Equine will kick off the week on Monday evening with two dissections. One will look at equine limb conformation and common injuries in a dissection of the lower limb. The other will be looking at the digestive tract and the importance of the golden rules of feeding. You can then take a tour of Rider Performance Centre and find out how our mechanical horses can improve riding performance.

Wednesday sees the sport department hosting a sports injuries practitioners meeting open to anyone that works with sports injuries.

Hartpury's veterinary nursing team will then wrap up the week with a pet and equine first aid session on the Friday evening.

Hartpury will also be working with a number of primary and secondary schools during the week for pupils to get some hands on experience in science based taster sessions. These include an animal safari, find out about horse health and evolution and Sport staff and students will be hosting Heartlinx - a fitness funday in conjunction with Active Gloucestershire.

Places are strictly limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.
