Punchline Talks! Politics with Alex McIntyre, Labour parliamentary candidate for Gloucester

Alex McIntyre admits he never really wanted to be a politician.

However, Alex, who works as a solicitor, said: "I grew up in a working class house in Yorkshire. I had a look at the country over the last 14 years of this Conservative government and we're desperate for a change.

"I always thought politics was just for people who had gone to Eton and gone to Oxford, a bit like our current MP, and not for people like myself. But we need more normal people down in Parliament.

"I've been very open about the fact that I live in Cam, near Dursley. If elected I will move to Gloucester because it's important that people have access to their MP."

He stresses his Gloucester connections, including being a season ticket holder at Gloucester City AFC and a season ticket holder at Gloucester Rugby.

Watch him explain what he feels the Labour Party can offer the citizens of Gloucester, including this number one priority of tackling the cost of living crisis.

"I know the value of the pound in my pocket. I know what it's like to struggle," he says, questioning whether Rishi Sunak has a similar idea of the value of the pound in his pocket.

"The world might look great from a helicopter but people driving down the road full of potholes might have a different argument."

Another major priority is getting the NHS back on its feet and tackling waiting lists, GP appointments, and the lack of NHS dentists in Gloucestershire.

"If we are lucky enough to form the next government we will have the worst inheritance of any government since the war," he says. "Our first mission is to get the economy growing again."

Alex added: "I think being an MP for Gloucester would be the biggest privilege I'll have in my entire life. I won't take a second job, I won't be going on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!

"We need a trade envoy for Gloucester. We've got a trade envoy for the Far East at the moment but we need someone whose full-time focus is for Gloucester. I will be a tireless advocate for the city if I'm elected."
